Short film ”A Viagem” wins Sophia Student Award 2019

SHORT FILM ”A VIAGEM” (THE JOURNEY) WINS SOPHIA STUDENT AWARD 2019

Henrique Lopes’ “A Viagem” was named Best Experimental Short Film at the 2019 Sophia Student Awards, an award presented by the Portuguese Film Academy, on a night when ETIC_Algarve received two awards.

The awards ceremony took place on Thursday, December 12, at the Pharmacy Museum in Lisbon.

“Have you ever committed suicide? No? I have.” – this is the teaser for “A Viagem” (The Journey), a short film about depression and suicide, written and directed by Henriques Lopes, a student in the Film and TV Production class of 17/19, who this year is part of the ETIC_Algarve team as a Video Assistant.

Born and raised in the Algarve, Henrique Lopes showed an interest in the world of cinema from an early age. He joined ETIC_Algarve in 2017 and since then has been involved in various projects in a wide range of areas. With many other projects in mind for the future, his main goal is to make good films in Portuguese.

This was the 6th edition of the Sophia Student Award and the fourth year that ETIC_Algarve was nominated, however it was the first time that it brought a (double) award home!

Tanya Gomes, a Communication and Multimedia Design student class of 18/20, was awarded joint second place in the challenge to create the graphic identity for the event.

The Sophia Student Awards were created as a way to encourage and reward future filmmakers, as well as to stimulate educational institutions and their teaching staff to share the results of work developed in a school context. The works distinguished with this award fall into the categories of Fiction, Documentary, Animation, Experimental, and Poster.

The three winners of each of the categories (twelve in total) compete for yet another selection, by another jury, which in February will announce the four finalists who will be present at the Sophia Awards Gala.
