Directing class wins European competition!

It was with enormous pride and excitement that we received, on International Education Day, the news that our students Beatriz Silvestre, Jordana Gasparinho, Margarida Cintra, and Tiago Brito, from the 1st year of the Film and TV Production course 23|25, under the guidance of tutor and trainer José Jesus, were the winners of the European #CedefopVideoAward 2023, with their short film “The Power of Storytelling,” in a competition that brought together 30 schools from across Europe.

This award aims to celebrate the importance of Education and Vocational Training in Europe, in this year that marks the European Year of Skills. With this short film, they tell the story of a young woman who returned to school six years after completing high school to pursue her dream of a career in cinema.

According to this group of ETIC_Algarve graduates, “storytelling creates a way to showcase different experiences and connect diverse audiences around the world. It transcends mere entertainment, capturing emotions and complexities, shaping perspectives. We chose to tell the story of a real student who finished high school a long time ago. After six years, she finally decided to pursue her dream career, following her passion for cinema by enrolling in a vocational school, where she acquired skills in storytelling, editing, production, continuity, sound design, camera operation, and lighting. Cinema is a timeless art, combining all ambitions into one: the ‘magic of cinema.’

A total of 30 vocational education and training (VET) Apprentice teams from 7 European countries took part in the competition.

The teams, made up of 117 trainees and teachers representing 18 European schools, responded to the challenge of sharing the skills they acquired during the educational process.

The “Storytellers” team, made up of our graduates, will receive the award during a dedicated event at the 26th Thessaloniki International Documentary Film Festival (March 7-17, 2024).

At this event, the winners will also take part in a panel discussion with Cedefop experts, festival representatives and vet teachers on the training prospects of young people in a rapidly changing educational and labour market environment.

Congratulations to everyone who developed and supported this project!
