ETIC_Algarve at Voxel School: A Step Towards the Future of VFX

ETIC_Algarve is always looking for innovation and methodologies that prepare its students for the real challenges of the creative industry. With this commitment in mind, a team composed of the educational director Nuno Ribeiro, the trainers of the Video Post-Production and VFX course, Ricardo Flôxo and Patrício Faísca, and the trainer and tutor of the Video Games course, Artur Filipe, travelled to Madrid to visit Voxel School, one of the 50 best digital arts schools in the world.

This staff mobility took place within the scope of the IN_motion 2024 project, funded by the Erasmus+ programme, and its main objective was to absorb methodological references, explore technical infrastructure and identify good practices that can be applied to ETIC_Algarve courses, both in the new Video Post-Production and VFX course and in the already established Video Games course.

“The main objective of this visit was to acquire knowledge, methodological references and insights into technical infrastructure for the implementation of a competitive VFX course aligned with market needs in the Algarve region and beyond.” – Ricardo Flôxo and Patrício Faísca, trainers on the Video Post-Production and VFX course.

Highlights of the visit:

  • Practical Methodology: Like ETIC_Algarve, Voxel School focuses on a practical approach, where theory is always aligned with real-world application in the market.
  • Vision for the Future of VFX: One of the major trends observed was the convergence between video, video games, and sound, forming what could be called the “golden triangle” of audiovisual production.
  • Continuous Connection with the Market: Voxel School has a teaching model based on constant monitoring of industry trends, something that will serve as inspiration for ETIC_Algarve to continue adapting its courses to the demands of the sector.

In addition, several commonalities were identified between the methodologies of the two schools, notably:

  • Practical methodology, already adopted by ETIC_Algarve, ensuring a hands-on approach from the first day of training;
  • Focus on trainers who are active in the market, allowing trainees to learn directly from working professionals;
  • Valuing multidisciplinarity, promoting the intersection of areas such as Video, Animation, Video Games and Sound, for a more comprehensive education.

“The visit to Voxel School was essential for us to understand how we can improve and evolve our courses, ensuring that our students are always one step ahead in the creative market.” – Nuno Ribeiro, Educational Director at ETIC_Algarve.

The Video Post-Production and VFX course at ETIC_Algarve will be included in the training programme for the 2025/2026 academic year as a specialisation course. It aims to be a milestone in training in the region, keeping up with trends in the visual effects market and consolidating the school as a benchmark in the field.

“It was a very productive experience and will undoubtedly help improve our vision of the courses and the integration of students into the job market.” – Artur Filipe, trainer and tutor on the Video Games course.
