When the student completes this added year they obtain the British academic degree BA (Hons) - Bachelor of Arts.

This is a year of study progression not only for the students who have finished the 2 year Video Games course at ETIC_ Algarve, but also available to external students as long as the requirements are met.

It is needed to have a certificate of competence in English.

This course provides a strong blend of Research, Critical Analysis, Design and Professional Practice, enabling students to enhance their skills and knowledge of methodologies that are essential for a successful international career.

Recipients

This 3rd year is destined to graduated students from ETIC_Algarve's Video Games 2 year technical course and external students, with 120 Credits completed, whose equivalence can be granted.

For all those who, meeting the requirements above, want to transform their education and start an international career in the Creative, Design, Script, Production and/or Testing in the Video Games area.

Course Content

NARRATIVE DESIGN AND INTEGRATION

  • In this module, you will explore the theory and integration of game narrative concepts. You will investigate storytelling in games, including narration, character creation, story arcs, point of view, voice, tense, cut scenes, narrative wash/narrative texture, backstory, storytelling using affordances and signifiers, world building, emergent storytelling, and found text/found audio.
  • You will engage in a range of strategies to help you develop your skills as a game narrative creator. Practical exercises and activities will be employed to help you develop your own narrative voice and individual writing and/or visual storytelling style.
  • For the assessment, you will individually produce a narrative and/or world-building plan with an in-engine demonstration of your created plan, showcasing your understanding of world-building and/or narrative techniques in practice. The assessment will consist of one ICA that includes these two components.

BETA ARCADE

  • This module is designed to give you experience working as a member of a games development team, closely mirroring industrial practice. You will work in teams to develop a small game demo. The assessment consists of two components: the first evaluates the demo and teamwork, while the second assesses your individual contribution through a development portfolio.
  • You will be required to develop a "Making of" Design/Art Book in electronic format as part of this process. Additionally, you will conduct a peer assessment.

GAMES PROJECT

  • The Games Project is a large-scale study that you will undertake under the supervision of a member of the academic staff. The project involves the production of a substantial artefact related to your course of study and culminates in writing a report and a viva, which includes the presentation, demonstration, and discussion of your artefact.
  • You will be guided to develop an appropriate sense of work discipline coupled with a professional outlook. You are expected to take responsibility for planning and executing an extended piece of work, including considering associated legal, social, ethical, and professional issues. This project allows you to explore a chosen subject area in depth, demonstrating your ability to analyse, synthesise, and creatively apply what you have learned throughout the programme while showcasing your critical, evaluative skills and professional awareness.

  • Certificate of Completion of the 2-year course in Video Games at ETIC_Algarve or, in case of external student, Certificate that proves the 120 ECTS credits (in Engish)
  • Documents from the Candidate and the Payment Guarantor (Identification Document +  Taxpayer Card + Proof of Address: water, electricity, telephone bills or driving license)
  • Letter of Recommendation (in english)

General Conditions

  • In certain modules, there may be Project Support classes, classes without a trainer for the development of applied exercises (not counted in the training hours and varying according to the course).
  • ETIC_Algarve may replace a trainer if it deems necessary to respond more effectively to the proposed objectives.
  • Classes are held in person but may occur online, depending on the situation.
  • The opening of each course/class/schedule is conditioned to a minimum number of registrations.
  • Enrolment in the desired schedule is limited to the number of available spots.

What do I get from this one-year degree?

British education offers the opportunity to earn a university degree with one year of study for individuals who have completed two years of training in a specific field or obtained a Level 5 qualification (120 credits). Upon completing this academic year (60 credits), students are awarded the BA (Hons) – Bachelor of Arts, a recognised higher education degree in the UK.

What is a Bachelor's Degree - Top Up Year?

This corresponds to the third year of a UK university program. Throughout one academic year, students gain advanced knowledge and hone their skills in a specific field. Upon finishing this third year, they are awarded a Bachelor's degree, an internationally recognised British qualification.

Who can take this Bachelor's Degree?

This curriculum is defined by Teesside University, while classes are held in person at ETIC Algarve. The diploma students receive is awarded and issued by Teesside University.
