How to direct a story from beginning to end

Develops technical and creative skills for creation of audiovisual contents for the video, cinema and television industries.

Transmits knowledge about camera operation, lighting and sound, as well as the fundamental training to integrate in any phase of the development of an audiovisual project: directing, pre-production, production, post-production and editing.

Promotes research, analysis and the practice of themes inherent to the creation of audiovisual contents.

Develops professional skills necessary for the integration in the audiovisual world and context.

After completing 2 years of this course, you are able to apply for a 3rd curricular “Top Up Year” at Prague College, in Prague, Czech Republic; or at ETIC in Lisbon, where you can obtain an Academic Training equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree (Level 6 of the European Qualification Framework).

Course Content

INTRODUCTION TO CINEMA

  • Introduction the cinematographic analysis, history and aesthetics 

AUDIOVISUAL LANGUAGE

  • Initiation to the development process of an audiovisual project, what are the steps and what are the names and roles of the team member
  • Development of work practices, image capturing techniques and technical language
  • Analysis and comprehension of the frame composition, the relation between narrative and plastic elements. Audiovisual grammar. 

AUDIOVISUAL AESTHETICS

  • Introduction to the aesthetic thinking
  • Pertinence of the aesthetic decisions according to the need of each project
  • Analysis of audiovisual pieces
  • Skill development in the fields of Directing Art and Photography 

SCRIPT SUPERVISING AND CONTINUITY

  • Concepts, methods and rules applied to script supervising
  • Manipulation of the narrative, emotional and sound continuity

SCRIPT, SCREENPLAY AND STORYBOARD

  • Strategies  of codification and transposition from script to screenplay, and to a shot list
  • Fundamental of Visual Storytelling
  • Building a planification and structuring the related Storyboard

DIRECTING ACTORS

  • Analysis and understanding of the main trends, acting schools and interpretation. 
  • Representation techniques, directing actors, casting and rehearsals with actors
  • Relationship between the director, the actores and the shooting crew

PRODUCTION

  • Processes, methodology and production typology
  • Budgets and financing
  • Laws and jurisdiction applied to the cinema, television and audiovisual industries

CAMERA AND LIGHTING

  • Anatomy of a camera
  • Introduction to shooting and lighting equipment, the respective rules and handling procedures 
  • Practice of technical image capture and the construction of distinct aesthetic environment
  • Introduction to reportage

SOUND

  • Introduction to sound equipment, the respective rules and handling procedures 
  • Importance of live sound and the relation between sound and image
  • Live sound capturing, pre-mix and sound mix techniques
  • Addressing soundtracks
  • Foley and the capturing sound after a shooting

OFFLINE AND ONLINE EDITING, COLOR GRADING AND GRAPHICS

  • Introduction to editing and post-production Softwares 
  • Audiovisual file organization, digitalization, editing and post-production procedures and methodologies 
  • Introduction to graphics applied to audiovisual projects

AUDIOVISUAL PROJECT I

  • Practical cinematographic exercise that aims to combine the knowledge acquired through the school year: writing, directing, directing actors, producing, camera operation, lighting, sound and editing. 
  • Development of an audiovisual project with the objective to communicate filmic ideas through images and sounds 

AUDIOVISUAL PROJECT II

  • Introduction to television program;
  • Rules and techniques for directing and filming in a studio
  • Regie handling criteria
  • Reviewing the roles and tasks of a television team crew

AUDIOVISUAL PROJECT III

  • Introduction to audiovisual techniques used in televised advertisement
  • Introduction to research, analysis and content creation techniques for advertisement and institucional videos
  • How to promote a product? Identify target audience and promotional objectives
  • History and analysis of videos in the musical context
  • Development of a creative project within a chosen area, that demonstrates the acquired knowledge

AUDIOVISUAL PROJECT IV

  • Cinematographic typologies
  • Roles, tasks and team coordination for the production of a short film
  • Elaboration of a collaborative documental or fictional “short film” project
  • Project follow-up by various experts of this area 

MULTIDISCIPLINARY PROJECTS, SHOWREEL, PITCHING AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP 

  • Introduction to communication and orality strategies 
  • Introduction to tools and strategies for business creation
  • Introduction and analysis of the importance of a Showreel

The applications take place between the months of June and October, until the beginning of the school year and classes, as long as there are vacancies in the courses. 

These can be done after the verification of the admission conditions, upon the payment of the registration and submitting the following documents:
